Behind the Art

Natalie Wacker is a Honolulu-based fine artist, who specializes in sculpting, painting and photography. She grew up in Seoul, South Korea (four years) and Hawaii (sixteen years) as the youngest of four children in a large blended family. As an artist, Natalie explores her connections to the natural world and she’s greatly inspired by water, the motion of clouds and Hawaii’s undeniable beauty. She's struck by simple things that make the moments compelling and captures these trends throughout her works, combining layers and interactions of colors in her pieces. She has been acknowledged with over a dozen Scholastic Art awards, and her work has been featured in the Hawaii State Art Museum on three occasions. Natalie is studying Art & Design at the University of Michigan, set to receive a BA in May 2025.

An Initiative With Art & Design - the artist’ statement

Aloha, my name is Natalie Wacker, and I am a Honolulu (HI), and Ann Arbor (MI), based artist. I have been creating art since the beginning of Highschool and trying to gain as much experience and knowledge as I can. These past few years I have been attending the University of Michigan School of Stamps, focused on the study of Art & Design. I have had the chance to work with some amazing, acknowledged, and respected artists, such as (a mentor of mine) John Koga amongst others. I find myself enjoying a wide range of mediums including sculpture, photography, and various methods of painting. I started off working with acrylics, watercolors, and pastels, though in more recent years I have shifted to a heavy focus in creating 3D pieces of work, such as ceramics, wood/metal sculptures, and I have started to make better quality large scale oil paintings with heavy inspiration from Van Gogh.

To talk about inspiration and motivation, a majority of the art pieces I create are based off of personal inquiry, interest or ambition. Some reflect my situation and perspective, some reflect hopes and goals, some reflect fears and worries, and some simply represent ideas that stick in my mind. For most, I cannot say that there has been a singular theme hat remains constant between all my work, but I like to think back to an important phrase that guides a lot of my ideas and intention with what I make: “Do Good Things”. I try to make this a life motto; and I don’t know if it translates into all of my art, but I want to encourage people to find outlets or reflect on things in their own lives in any way I can or with whatever objects speak to them.

I am really proud of the community projects that I am involved in such as the Chil’lit initiative, and the Covid-19 Women Owned Business Research Project. As these initiatives are super important to me, I plan to donate a large portion of the revenue to the following donation resources, and I encourage other people to do their own research and inquiry on the following as well.
